The 5th Edition of the Superprestigio Dirt Track officially launched today in the Olympic and Sport Museum Juan Antonio Samaranch, presented by Marta Carranza, the Sports delegate from the Barcelona Town Hall and Jaime Alguersuari, executive president in RPM-MKTG.
8 world campions are on the quest for Marc Márquez crown, who has decided not to participate in the event after a successful but demanding MotoGP World Championship.
Toni Elías (former Moto2 World Champion and winner of the Moto America Superbike) second classified in the 2016 edition looks adamant to take his 1st win in Barcelona: “After taking this new championship in Europe, to end the Season in high would mean a lot to me. With Marc and Brad out of the event, it might look an easy task but I’m pretty sure JD Beach and Briar Bauman will take no hostages!”.
David Checa, triple World endurance champion, is keen to make his Superprestigio debut: “I remember the magic of the Supercross events in the Palau Sant Jordi arena in the 90’s when I was a child. Now it is time for me to race on the oval in my Superprestigio debut, so I must work hard and be ready for this challenge! I’ll put all my skills but with humility!”
Ferran Cardús, 2016 Spanish Flat-Track champion, is aware that he is facing his big opportunity: “I’m focused on a good performance in Barcelona. Time to practice very hard, because bike setup in the Superprestigio is crucial!”
American flattrackers will be 100% new in this Superprestigio run. Briar Bauman, winner of two race events in the 2017 American Flat Track championship season (6th in the overall) and JD Beach, a rider that excels both on ovals and asphalt and winner of the 2015 MotoAmerica Supersport. “I am much more than excited: this is a dream come true!”, said Bauman. JD Beach will try “to prepare as much as I can this wonderful race. I am here to win!”. Jared Mees, former Superprestigio racer and current US champion is advising Bauman. The double Superprestigio winner, Brad Baker, is in charge of helping his good friend JD Beach.
The Sports Delegate in Barcelona Town Hall, Marta Carranza, said that “organising a top-class event like the Superprestigio demands hard work and success is the result of this and the commitment of everybody at RPM-MKTG. We are happy to celebrate the 30th anniversary of this venue with such a fantastic racing event”
Jaime Alguersuari, executive president in RPM-MKTG, said that Márquez’s absence must be seen as a big opportunity “Marc is not here this year, but we have two Spanish riders gathering together four world titles. They are not in the spotlight as Marc is, they wear jeans, but one of them, toni Elias, has just clinched the MotoAmerica Superbike title!”.
Everything is ready for the Europe vs America tie-breaker event!
